Joseph was a veteran of the American Civil War. He enlisted 14 Sep 1861 at Ogdensburg, St Lawrence, New York for 3 years as a private in Company K, 60th Infantry Regiment and then re-enlisted 14 Dec 1865 for another 3 years. On 08 Jul 1865 he was promoted to Corporal in the same Company.
