[edit] Personal History[edit] Lucius Boardman Donkle Jr. (1922-2009)MICHIGAN CITY, IN--Lucius B. Donkle, Jr., age 87, passed way on March 12, 2009 after a heroic battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by two sons, Lucius (Priscilla) B. Donkle III of Valparaiso, IN, Christian (Cheri) K. Donkle, of Ottawa, Illinois, United States, and daughter, Heidi (Douglas) D. Conn of Turner, ME. Grandchildren: Wayne and Gretchen Conn; Lucius IV and Alexander Donkle; and Daniel, Victoria, and Jillian Donkle. Dearest friend, Marjorie Hammond; sisters-in-law Helen (Grant) Meyer and Margot (Tom) Eby, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at the Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington St., Michigan City, IN. Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 from 4-7 P.M. at the Carlisle Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Oshkosh, WI. Lucius Donkle, Jr. was born March 3, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois, United States to Dr. Lucius B. and Francis (Peterson) Donkle. in 1952, he married Joellen Murdock Donkle, who preceded him in death on March 6, 2008. Lucius was also preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Lorraine Weatherby and Donna Baker. Lucius served his country in World War II as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Transportation Corps in the South Pacific. He was an engineering graduate of Cornell University and earned an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School in 1952. Lou was a member of the ASME, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and was a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois. He was the director of new product development with the Interlake Corporation for many years. During his career, Lou was involved in the development of new products that resulted in several different patents listed in his name. Lou was the first president of the Save our South Shore Committee, whose activities lead to the formation of the Northern Indiana Commuter transportation district. He served on the Duneland Beach Board of Directors and was an active member of the Michigan City Power Squadron. Lou was also a member of the Michigan City Yacht Club, and First Presbyterian Church as well as the Michigan City chapter of the American Legion. Lou loved to sing. While in college, he toured Europe with the Cornell Glee Club. In his later life, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church Choir and also participated annually in the local Messiah performances. During winters in the Florida Keys, Lou was a member of a local barbershop quartet for many years. During their retirement years, Lou and Joellen traveled extensively around the world, making trips to Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, Hawaii, Europe, and Japan. Additionally, they traveled in their cruising sailboat through the inland waterways of the Eastern seaboard, finally ending their sailing adventure in Annapolis, Maryland.
