Lucille Heslep, died May 3, 1964. She attended Monroe County public schools, and was graduated from Marshall University. She taught school in McDowell and Mingo Counties, Wv. She met Hubert Cleveland Whitley who was working in a coal company store located in the town, Panther, WV. Their daughter Joan was born here, two yrs. later they moved to Fireco, wv. "Whit" was employed by the Leckie Coal Co and they transferred him to be the store manager at this location--he worked for Leckie six yrs before moving to Coal City where he opened his own store. Lucille did not teach school after her marriage--she clerked in the store, keep the accounts, maintained the care of two children and their home, she was a leader in the community, Eastern Star, church, played the piano with talent when requested to do so for weddings, funearls, ceremonies, etc., she was a noble lady in every way--respected and very much appreciated by all. About two years before her death she begin to suffered extreme pain along her rib cage and shoulders. The local hospital could not detect a cause for this pain, even suggested it may be an imagined--her daughter, Joan, and her husband, Bill, took her to Charlottesville, Va. University Hospital, at the first interview the doctor suspected bone cancer--surgery confirmed this--eighteen months later she was gone.
