Hubert Cleveland, called "Cleve" by his relations in Ga. later after living in Wv. he was know as "Whit". His grandson, Scott, used the name , " papa Whit", this name we all used until the time of his death.

He came to Wv. around 1924, he was employed by his uncle George Jackson who was building a road in the Mullens area. Later Whit took a store clerk job at Panther. Wv. He married Lucille here; his daughter Joan was born at this location. He became a store manager for the Leckie Coal Co, Fireco, Wv. In 1936 he begin his own business, a small store in Coal City. After two yrs. here, he moved his family and business to Athens, Wv. Two yrs. in Athens, and then he returned to Coal City, this time in business as the Coal City Supply Co until his retirement in 1963. Papa whit , about five foot nine, one hundred eighty pounds, was a well liked man. Always calm, never critical of anything, he enjoyed all sports and had a personality of smiles and patience for those about him.

Lucille died of bone cancer in May, l964, two or three yrs later, Whit at the age of 76 driving his old Ford returned to the South. He married again and lived with his wife Florence in Lanett, Alabama. He had two brothers and one sister living in the area at this time, a short distance into Ga. Papa Whit had sugar diabetes for many years, due to this disease at the age of 88 his left leg had to be amputated just above the knee, with other complications he died a few months later.
