Facts and Events
Called "Sparky" in school. From Hansford County book: "In 1919, after World War One, the Santa Fe Railroad built a branch road from Shattuck, Oklahoma to Spearman, Texas, five miles east of Old Hansford, in Hansford County, Texas where L.S. McLain moved with his brother, Maynard McLain. Together, they built a Real Estate Office in Spearman in the fall of 1919. In the Spring of 1920, the McLains saw most of Old Hansford moved to Spearman by steam engine. Lester well remembers that when he came to Spearman, there was only one graded road throughout the county, from Old Ochiltree through Old Hansford and on to Guymon, Oklahoma. When you chose another direction, you traveled trails leading to neighbor's homes or angling roads like the one to Amarillo which took you through pastureland one hundred and five gates by way of Dumas, Texas. This trip took all day long provided you had two gate openers along to speed things up." 1930 Census of ED #1, Spearman, Hansford County, Texas Barkley Street name age married born FB MB occupation McLain, Lester S. head 28 md at 27 MI MI IN Real estate, Land Ada E. wife 23 md at 23 LA TX TX References
