Following the deaths of their two children in 1881, Lester and Catharine both were devasted by the loss. Lester gave up farming and they left Cedar County, Iowa to travel almost all the way across the state to settle into a small town named Manning, in Carroll County, Iowa. There they operated a boarding house for a number of years until 1909. They then moved on to Roberts County, South Dakota where they both operated a small farm for a number of years. By 1920 they were both back in neighboring Muscatine County, Iowa probably to be closer to Catharine's elderly parents who lived less than 30 miles away in West Branch, Cedar County, Iowa. Lester's parents had moved to Kansas and both of them had died by 1904. Many of his siblings had also moved to Kansas with the exception of William and Eunice who had married and were both living in Muscatine.
When Lester died in 1932, he was buried in the small rural cemetery, Pee Dee, near Springdale, where Catharine's parents were buried. When Catharine died in 1945, she also was buried in the Pee Dee cemetery. (Brian L. Lightfoot)
