In1870, my grandfather was in Bowling Green, Ky, painting, living I don't know but he has his name spelled Crawl.

There is a birth record in the MA Vitals for Leroy I. (or T.) Crowley born 29 Aug 1853, son of Jacob Crowley, farmer, born in Mansfield. Mother's name not given, but she is born in Maine. I did a soundex search for Roy Crall, born between 1841 and 1855, and this was the only match (Vol. 72, Page 100). I also searched Massachusetts Vital Records to 1850 with the same criteria, and there were no matches. [Ancestry.com shows that Jacob's wife was named Mary P. in the 1850 census in Mansfield. False lead - the family is in Maine in 1860 with no LeRoy living.]

There is no guarantee that Leroy Crall's birth was ever recorded. The early records were very spotty. I spent some time searching the 1850 and 1860 Federal Census on Ancestry.com and I did not find any credible leads. Is it possible that Leroy Crall is a made-up name? Have you found his obituary or death record?

1870 Leroy Craul in Bowling Green, Warren Co., KY., page 89 listed as born in Ky, portrait painter in the family of Johnathan Grahm, dry good merchant42, b. ky, Jaimie 27 (assume wife), born in Mississsippi and daughter May F. 5 Bryant 2, both born in KY, SB Marshall*, Moses Bitening, WH Trout, Wash Anderson, which his family is domestic servants and black. This seems to be a boarding house of some kind.

In 1880 when he was married to my grandmother Emma Crall he spelt his name Crall.

Leroy's birthday should be between 27th of June and the 19th of July. b. 1847
