Lee was a lawyer with Hartzell & Todd, 111 E. Main Street, Room 216 and later at 216-217-218 Swinney Block, Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was a Republican state senator. Lee's obituary reads, "LEE HARTZELL, ATTORNEY, EX-STATE SENATOR, 72, DIES - A prominent Fort Wayne attorney and former Republican State Senator, Lee J. Hartzell, 72, died yesterday at 9:25 p.m. in the Lutheran Hospital, where he had been a patient five days. Mr. Hartzell was born in Marion Township near Hoagland and later came to Fort Wayne. He received his education at Huntington Business University and Indiana Law School, of which he was a 1907 graduate. He was first associated in the law business with Ray McAdams from 1908 to 1916, and later with Levi A. todd from 1916 to 1946. In 1950, Richard A. Smith joined the firm, withdrawing about a year ago. State Senator from 1920 to 1924 and 1928 to 1932, he ws the author of the "Hartzell Act," which set stiff penalties on certain ciminarl offenses - WAS COUNTY ATTORNEY - Mr. Hartzell was a member of the Hoagland Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge, Olive Branch, at Poe. Other political offices he held were that of deputy prosecutor in Allen County many years ago, then of County Attorney 1942-1948. While a State Senator, he was President Pro-Tem of the Senate 1931-1932. Mr. Hartzell was an unsuccessful Republican candidate for Allen Circuit Judge in 1942, losing in the primary election to William H. Schannen, the present judge. In addition to his legal business and political activities, he has many property holding about town. Surviving are a mephew, Warren Hartzell, and a niece, Mrs. Kenneth Smith, both of Fort Wayne. The body was taken to the D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Home." [Journal Gazette, Monday 29 August 1955, pg. 1] He is buried at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in New Haven, Indiana. |
