Mrs. Gore Dies at Age of 102 - News was received here Monday of the recent death in St. Louis, Mo, of Mrs. Charles H. Gore, who was born on a plantation in St. James Parish and at one time resided in New Orleans.
Mrs. Gore, who had made her home in St. Louis since 1892, was 102 years old. On her 100th birthday she received a visit from Joseph Cardinal Ritter; who presented her with a silver Rosary.
She was born in 1851 [sic 1861] on the family plantation in St. James Parish, which was renamed "The Laura" for her. The former Laura Locoul, she was a maid in Carnival courts of 1883 and 1887. She was married to the late Charles H. Gore in 1892, following which she moved to St. Louis. Prior to this she made her home at 1017 Bourbon.
Survivors include two daughters, Miss Laura A. Gore and Miss Desiree L. Gore, with whom she made her home in St. Louis; a son, Charles H. Gore Jr. and a grandson.

  3.   Laura Plantation, in Wikipedia: The Free Encyclopedia.

[Extract] - Laura Locoul Gore was the fourth mistress of the plantation. She was born in the house in 1861. She inherited it and ran it as a sugar business until 1891, when she sold the plantation to Aubert Florian Waguespack. The Waguespack family ran, resided on, and lived at the plantation until 1984.

Laura Plantation's association with the Br'er Rabbit tales drew preservationist Norman Marmillion's attention to the site. He created a for-profit company that attracted enough investors to embark on a ten-year plan of restoration. Some investors are descendants of former owners.
