Katherine Bieringer was born on 18 May 1844 in the kingdom of Baden-Wurtemburg, now a southwestern state of Germany. She went to Paris when she was about 25 to live with an uncle, and in Nov. of 1874 married Joseph Close in the vicinity of Blieskastel, Bavaria (now also a part of Germany). Joseph and Katherine immigrated to Detroit, Michigan in April 1875, after his parents were already living there. Joseph and Katherine had six children, all born in Detroit. She worked as a dressmaker. Joseph died in 1891 and Katherine on 22 March 1927.
