- ↑ New York records show Katherina (spelled Catherine) as arriving in the US on 5-4-1867. On the passenger list, she lists her place of origin as "Bairn", which is obviously meant to be Bayern (German for Bavaria). She was born in Rehweiler. She was 18 years old when she arrived in America.
When she settled in Mt Pleasant, Ohio - she lived a short distance from her brother, Jacob. Presumably, he's the reason she came to Ohio - hoping to find work. She also lived just a couple of houses down the street from Carl Laatsch, whom she later married. Apparently, this is where they 1st met.
Both Katherina and Carl are listed on the 1870 census as "domestic servants", living with their employers. Conjecturaly, Katherina (listed as Kate on the census) was perhaps a maid / housekeeper - Carl most likely worked on a farm.
