Karoline Catherine was born in Sulzfeld, Baden, Germany. At the age of 15 she went to Lyons, France to work for a Jewish famiy as a nurse maid. During the War of 1870, she was forced to flee with the family to London, England where they resided for one year until they could safely return to Lyons, France.

Karoline C. Winterbauer, daughter of Johann and Fredericka, was born July 14, 1851 at Sulzfeld, Baden, Germany. At the age of 15, she went to Lyons, France to work for a Jewish family as a nursemaid.

During the War of 1870, she with the family was forced to flee to London, England where they lived for one year until they could safely return to Lyons, France. At an Easter morning church service in Frankfurt-on-the-Main, Germany Charles and Karoline discovered they were from the same village. They were married at Frankfurt-on-the-Main September 6, 1874. Karoline was 23 and Charles 26 at the time of marriage. They moved to Sulzfeld and then in 1878 moved back to Lyons, France.
