John Quast, age 21, is also living in the household. He removed to Rochester, Monroe County, NY in 1850. He began life in Monroe county as a farm laborer working for just $11 per month. He is also listed in the 1851/52 Rochester City Directory as a "Cigar Maker" living at 41 S. Washington. He hoarded his salary and with money that he brought from home, was able to purchase a small farm in the town of Henrietta, Monroe Co. NY on 28 April 1852 for $1, 543.47, selling the property to Michael North and Peter Brand for $2130.00 on the 18th of March 1854. Karl then purchased property in Rochester on the same date for $900.00. He then entered the employ of Nurserymen Ellwanger and Barry. According to the 1857 City Directory and the 1860 Census of Rochester, he was working as a carpenter and joiner for Ellwanger and Barry. His real property was $1000. and $200. personal estate. He left the employ of Ellwanger and Barry at that time. On the 2nd floor of the hotel was a dance hall, popular with the young people of the area ( Margaret McNab - Brighton historian 1981). He was postmaster at the village at the time of his death, having held that position since his appointment on 25 Feb. 1867.
