  4.   The wives of Joshua and his brother John are hopelessly entangled in the secondary literature, apparently trusting the author's instincts over the records. Savage says John m. (1) Mehitable Wainwright, m. (2) Mary Cotton, died by drowning; and Joshua m. (1) Rebecca --- and m. (2) Mary --- but thinks he probably only had one wife, one or the other being misrecorded. Source:Atwater, Francis. Atwater History and Genealogy : 1456-1956, Vol. 1, p. 49, says Joshua m. (1) Mehitable Wainwright, m. (2) Mary Cotton, died by drowning; says nothing about John except that he is not mentioned in his mother's will and presumed dead. Source:Torrey, Clarence Almon. New England Marriages Prior to 1700, says that John married Maria Cotton with no mention of Mehitable; and apparently based on a rumor ("it is somewhere written") that Savage said he was unable to find evidence for, Torrey says that Joshua married Mary (Maverick) Smith.

Birth records show John had two children by wife Mehitable and his probate in 1693 shows that she survived him. So he had no second wife. Joshua has a child by wife Rebecca and another by wife Mary. The timeline is confused, but the excommunication in 1687 suggests things were not normal. Since John did not marry Mary Cotton, but the marriage record to Samuel Partridge gives her name as Mary Atwater, it appears Joshua's second wife was Mary Cotton. The death record of Samuel Partridge's wife matches the birth of Mary Cotton in 1670, does not match the birth of Mary Maverick in 1661.
