For the 1880 census, Josephine, her husband and their son were residing with her parents in Sylvan Twp. John Shufelt was evidently helping to work the farm. Later census information indicates she had one child die before 1900.

Obituary from the Reed City newspaper


Mrs. Josephine Shufelt, wife of John Shufelt, residing on north Higbee street, died Thursday of typhoid fever, aged 50 years. Deceased was born in Sylvan, Washtenaw county, Mich., Sept. 30, 1855. Seventeen years agao she came to Lincoln township, this county, and some years ago moved to this city. The funeral was held Saturday from the M.E. church, Rev. Irwin officiating. Interment was made in the Milson cemetery. John Barker, a brother, Mrs. Susana Stadel, a sister and her husband, and Dayton Case, a nephew, all of Ionia county, were in attendance at the funeral.
