57th Bomb Wing
Flew in the "Star Dust", B25.
I also have a picture of him being medalled (?). On the photo is signed "Bob Knapp 57th Bomb Wing". On the back is written: "1944 Joe with General Knapp - Signed by General Knapp Sept 1988 Orlando Florida"
Your unit was the 381st Bombardment Squadron, of the 310th Bombardment Group (Medium), 57th Wing, in 12th Air Force. The 310th BG flew B-25 Mitchells. For your research purposes you'll want to concentrate on the 310th BG.
The basic run down goes like this. Groups were typically made up of 4 squadrons. Groups were subordinated to a Wing. Wings were in turn subordinated to one of 16 numbered air forces. Some larger air forces had a Division immediately below the air force, which wings were subordinated to...and to confuse matters further you would also have Tactical, Bombardment, & Fighter commands mixed in with the organizational structure of some air forces.
