Notes

Some identify Rev. Joseph as the son of Agerton Willis, who supposedly came to Craven County from ISle of Wight in VA.

see: Randy Willis notes]. Randy's notes also identify an "Agerton" as one of 19 children of Rev. Joseph's . Rev. Joseph's will, however, does not include an "Agerton" or anything like 19 children. So if there was an Agerton Willis in the he was probably neither the father nor the son of Rev. Joseph..

Place of birth could also have been Beaufort County, North Carolina.
Record of children found in a Family Bible in the possession of Janet Barrow, daughter of Clifford and Nona Lee (Willis) Toler. ..... Janet was raised in an area of Craven County (NC) known as "Willis Neck", located along Highway 17 between Vanceboro and Ernul.
Joseph Willis was a Baptist minister at the Swift Creek Baptist Church, ordained on February 27, 1756.
A copy of Joseph's will, January 27, 1784, is in possession of Dan Willis, Joseph mentions his wife and each of his children, except Elizabeth, in that document; it is assumed that Elizabeth died before January 27, 1784.
Joseph's will, with regard to his son Thomas, reads as follows:
"I give and bequeath to my son, Thomas Willis, one negro man named Absalom after my wife's marriage or death besides the land, part of a negro, and other things he has had already."
Name of Joseph's wife, Elizabeth Simmons, is also found in The History of North Carolina Baptists, by George Washington Paschal, pp. 182-183.
Dan Willis also has a copy of the will of Samuel Willis (brother of Joseph), dated January 31, 1782. In this document Samuel appoints his two brothers, Joseph and James, to be the executors of his last will and testament. This document verifies the existence and names of at least three Willis brothers, but no mention is made of their parentage.
