The estate of Joseph Welles was valued at £342-08-00 on 13 June 1698 by Thomas Hooker, Ciprian Nickols, and Edward Allyn, who make a note that 'Mr. Joseph Wells deceased on the 13th of June 1698.' The inventory also notes that he left only two heirs, his relict Elizabeth and one daughter named Elizabeth who was 'about one year and five months old.' (Hartford Probate District, Connecticut Estate Piles, docket no. 5830). On 10 July 1744, William Powell of Hartford petitioned the probate court that his wife Elizabeth, the daughter of Joseph Welles, deceased, was herself deceased and therefore that her dower should be set off to his mother-in-law Elizabeth Welles, widow, for the widow's natural life (Manwaring 1:593 citing XIV:46). …

Published Works: FEH 658 (which adds two more children to family, including one placed in the thirteen months between Joseph and Elizabeth's baptisms); Goodwin (1856) 257; Welles (1968) 4:36: family CCCXLVII (lists four children in total: John, Joseph, Joshua, and Elizabeth, all but Elizabeth dying young)."

It seems odd that the inventory would be dated the same as the date of death.
