The Clerk of the Supreme Court of Appeals in Staunton, and Commissioner in Chancery, he was the son of a prominent physician. He studied for one session at Washington College after graduating from Staunton Academy. From Washington College, he went to the University of Virginia. He studied law and became a practicing attorney in Staunton. His interest was in publishing and he co-edited the Staunton Spectator for more than a decade when he was appointed the position of Commissioner of Chancery. He held that position throughout the war and then was elected Clerk of the Supreme Court of Appeals. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates and was a State Senator, representing Augusta County. He was president of the institution for the deaf and blind in Staunton, as well as Western Lunatic Asylum. An eminent historian, he wrote "Annals of Augusta" from original sources, a superior local history. A devoted elder of the Presbyterian church, he was a Whig, then a Democrat.
