"Almost the entire information we have concerning this man beyond what is stated in his father's will quoted above is found in the following deed..."
[Note: the deed is cited below. The father's will on p. 318, dated 1679, says "in case my son Thomas Underwood now in old England shall within two year after my decease come to abide and dwell here", in which case he was to get 6 acres in Cambridge. But the will of the widow of the father devises six acres Cambridge to her kinsman John Gibson, which suggests the son in England never came, i.e., this will describes a different man than Joseph's father. Note: this source, p. 322, gives a death date of 27 Apr 1760, but no such death date is found. A Joseph Underwood d. Lexington 25 Apr 1760 per Lexington VRs, but his record is identified as having "wid. Eunice", and the probate file for Joseph Underwood in 1760 shows a widow Eunice. The probate document naming children of Joseph and Ruth (no case number is given) has not been located.]

10 Mar 1717/18: Thomas Underwood of Lexington husbandman for love good will and affection w'ch I do beare to my Dutyfull Son Joseph Underwood of the Same Town husbandman give my land in Lexington about 40 acres. Signed by Thomas Underwood and Mary Underwood.

  3. The deed cited shows Joseph's parents were named Thomas and Mary Underwood. Contrary to Source:Underwood, Lucien Marcus. Underwood Families of America, p. 20, possibly Joseph's parents are Family:Thomas Underwood and Mary Palmer (1). More research is needed. The Underwood Genealogy suggests that that Thomas d. 1691 and there is a death record in Watertown in 1691 for a Thomas Underwood 4 days after the birth of a son Thomas Underwood. Given the uncertain identification of son Thomas as "undoubtedly" (always meaning assumed, not based on evidence) as a soldier of the same name, it seems quite possible the death was actually the 4-day old infant, and not the father. There is no probate file for Thomas Underwood, which given the many young children, one would certainly expect. There are also two deeds by Thomas and Mary Underwood of Watertown which would appear to be this couple after the alleged death of the father (Vol. 10, p. 383 in 1694; Vol. 12, p. 624 in 1697). On p. 302, the Underwood Genealogy credits Thomas as being "the founder" of the Lexington Branch, his son Jonathan being covered. It would not be surprising then, if there was a son Joseph, that he end up in Lexington, too. Additionally Thomas might be expected to name a son Joseph, after his father.
Needless to say, Source:Hudson, Charles. History of the Town of Lexington, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, from Its First Settlement to 1868, p. 714, is incorrect in identifying Joseph as s/o Joseph and Elizabeth Underwood, b. 1681.
