   Joe was born in Tacoma, Wash., on Nov. 12, 1923, to Joseph Albert Twogood and Mildred (Barnett) Twogood, and passed away on Nov. 9, 2000, at his home. He grew up with a brother Jim, and a sister Doris in the Gig Harbor area. His dad was a logger; he and his brother helped clear and build what are now some of the main roads in the Gig Harbor area. He attended Peninsula High School and was a star baseball pitcher on the Peninsula High School baseball team. He graduated from the Machinist Apprenticeship at PSNS during World War II. He also graduated from Kildahls Marine Engineering School in 1961 with an "All Ships-Unlimited Horse Power Marine Engineering license." During his apprenticeship at PSNS he met and married Gladys Elaine Sievertsen in June, 1943. They had six children, Steven, Christine, Joseph III, Jerome, Karen and Robert. 
   He started working for the Black Ball Ferries, which latter became the Washington State Ferries, on the Fox Island route in 1944. When the Fox Island Bridge was built, he transferred to the the Pt. Defiance/Tahlequah route. When he got his engineering license upgraded to "Unlimited Horsepower" he transferred to the Seattle/Bremerton route and the Seattle/Bainbridge Island route to work as "Chief Engineer" and "Staff Chief Engineer." He retired in 1980 as "Staff Chief Engineer" of the Anacortes/Sidney B.C. route. 
   Elaine, his wife of 39 years, passed away in 1985. He then married Lucy Ida Theisen on Dec. 27, 1986. 
   He was an extraordinary fisherman; he loved to tell the story about the 50 lb. salmon he caught at Westport using a 10 lb. test leader. He also caught a 63 lb. salmon on the Kenai river in Alaska. He and Elaine were avid square dancers and would travel to Arizona in the winters to join their many friends. He enjoyed RVing, and was a member of the Gypsy Roamers RV club. He traveled across the United States, from Alaska to New York and Florida. He also enjoyed golfing and was known for using orange golf balls.
