Obituary: On Wednesday, April 18, 1945, the spirit of Joseph Scales took its flight to realms above; the soul left its earthly tabernacle in which it had resided for almost 74 years, to dwell in the House not made with hands, Eternal in the Heavens.

He was the son of William and Mary Scales (deceased) . On March 31, 1888, he was united in marriage to Rosa Maud Hacker. To this union 10 children were born; Grace May, Belva Ann and Minnie Pearl preceded him in death. The living children are: Fred of Anderson, John of Martinsville, Virgil, Roy and Joe of Bloomington, Mrs. Orland Alexander (whose husband is in the overseas service), and Mrs. Joe Young of Bloomington.

There are also nine grandchildren. Three, Wallace, Fred Jr\., and Floyd Scales, are serving overseas. Three great-grandchildren also survive. Three brothers and three sisters have preceded him in death, which are: John, Enoch, Harvey, Martha, Elizabeth, and Mrs. Mary Neal. Surviving are Mrs. Minnie Hacker and Mrs. Kos Baker of Martinsville.

"Uncle Joe," as he was known by his friends, possessed a kind and friendly disposition and was well liked by his neighbor whom he was always ready to befriend.
