Joseph Russell was born in the "area now known as the Hayfield area" of Frederick County, Virginia, and he died between 1820 and 1823 in Belmont County, Ohio. [Source: p. 172-b, Jacob's House.] Hayfield is not far to the west of Winchester, Virginia. Joseph's parents are not named in Jacob's House. Belmont, Ohio is about 20 miles west of Wheeling, Virginia (later WVa).

There is a Keckley Run in the Hayfield area. It runs into Wolf Spring Creek to the west of Back Mountain Road.

Joseph Russell was born in 1756 and Elizabeth Keckley in 1777; she was the daughter of Jacob Keckley, Jr. and ___ Snapp. Their first son was David, born in 1813. Jonas was the second son, and David the third. [Source: p. 172-a, Jacob's House, citing Douglas Mark Wiggins.]

"Joseph Russell, a native of Frederick County, Virginia, came to Belmont County, Ohio where he died in 1820. His widow, Elizabeth Russell came to what is now Noble County in 1823. She died in 1837. The family consisted of nine children. Mrs. Russell not only assisted in clearing the farm, but worked at weaving and spinning. Frequently the food of the family consisted of "roasting ears" of corn ground on a grater. The hand mill and "hominy block" were also brought into use to furnish a substitute for meal." [Source: p. 172-a, Jacob's House, citing p. 494 (sic, 342?) of Noble County, Ohio History.]

Joseph is said to have emigrated to Ohio about 1800. [Source: p. 172-a, Jacob's House.]

"I don't know Joseph's origin or paternity. He may be the Joseph Russell who was last taxed for land in Frederick County, Virginia, on the 1801 list. (As were also Moses and Richard Russell.) I have yet to see any other primary documentary record of Joseph Russell in Va., Ohio, or anywhere else. His son Reuben [not Richard] claimed - in 1880 census - that father [Joseph] was born in England. The 1850 census for each of Joseph's older children should be checked to see what they report as their birthplaces. Major source for family data was: Janet E. Russell of Canton, Ohio, in 1992." [Source: Feb. 22, 2009, George Ely Russell, CG, FASG, FNGS (Russell Genealogical Collection: North American Russell families 1600-1850).]

1820 census for Union Township, Belmont County, Ohio: Elizabeth Russel (sic) - 320000/21210. [This shows five male children, five female children and a female in the age 26-45 category.]
