Levi Newlan / Dies at Gridley Joseph Levi Newlan, aged 68 years and 16 days, died about 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, March 31, 1953 at the home in Gridley. He had suffered a stroke earlier in the day. Mr Newlan was born March 15, 1885. He had resided on a farm southeast of Gridley until he moved to Gridley. For a number of years he was tank wagon operator for the D-X Oil company at Gridley. Mr Newlan is survived by his wife of the home and a half-sister, Mrs Mabel Bolen of LeRoy., Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon from the Gridley Christian church and will be conducted by Rev Robert Thompson of Newton. Interment will be in Teachout cemetery. FUNERAL SERVICES / FOR LEVI NEWLAN Funeral services for Levi Newlan were held from the Gridley Christian church Thursday afternoon, April 2, 1953, at 2 o'clock in charge of Rev. Robert McCorkeral. Esther Benson, Raymond Reece and Viva Russell sang "Abide with Me" and "Fading," accompanied by Dorothy Green. Burial was in Teachout cemetery north of Gridley. Joseph Levi Newlan, son of John and Anna Newlan, was born March 15, 1885 near Gridley and departed from this life March 31, 1953 at the age of 68 years and 16 days. He was born near Gridley and has resided in this community his entire life. On September 5, 1940 he was married to Cora Nelson and they have resided in Gridley since that time. He finished 22 years employment with the O. F. Duncan Oil Co. and retired three years ago. Levi, as he was familiarly known, was a friend to all and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances. He was secretary of the Odd Fellows for many years. He was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever the need was felt and he was especially loved by the children. One brother, Ray Newlan, preceded him in death July 1942. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, two half brothers, Fred H. Johnson of Fairview, Kansas and Ralph L. Johnson of Burlington, and a half sister, Mrs Charles Bolen of LeRoy, five stepchildren Carl Nelson of Wichita, Howard Nelson of Rawlins, Wyo., Kenneth Hansell of Gridley, Mrs Jack Morland and Mrs Alan Herring of Wichita and ten grandchildren, ten nephews and nieces and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his departure. from transcription of Teachout Cemetery NEWLAN, J.
