death notice and obituary from Coffey Co., KS, newspapers: Ray Newlan, 59, / dies at Garnett [Anderson Co., KS] Ray Newlan, aged 59, died at 7 o'clock Sunday evening, July 19, 1942 at the home eight miles west of Garnett. He had been suffering with heart trouble for some time and was seriously ill and other complications developed. Mr Newlan was born near Gridley and was a resident of Coffey county for many years. He is survived by his wife of the home and by three children: Mrs Alice Newlan Leowe of Salina; Lester Newlan of near Westphalia and Mrs Tommy Sexton of Welda. He is also survived by a brother, Levi Newlan of Gridley; a half-sister, Mrs Mabel Bolen of LeRoy; and two half-brothers, Ralph Johnson, who left last week for the U. S. Army and Fred Johnson of Neosho Falls. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Garnett Christian church and will be conducted by Rev Thos. M. Palmer of Burlington. Interment will be in Garnett cemetery. SERVICES AT GARNETT / FOR HENRY RAY NEWLAN Funeral services for Ray Newlan were held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Garnett Christian church and were conducted by Rev Thos. M. Palmer, pastor of the Burlington Christian church, assisted by Rev Ralph Hammon, Garnett pastor. Interment was in Garnett cemetery. Among the relatives and friends from a distance who attended the services were: Mr and Mrs Everett Leowe and daughter Janice of Salina; Mrs Mary Stifler of Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs Gertie Cramer and Mr and Mrs Levi Newlan of Gridley; Mr and Mrs Chas. Bolen of LeRoy; Fred Johnson of Neosho Falls; Mr and Mrs Ralph Johnson of Ft. Leavenworth; Mr and Mrs Leowe and family of Williamsburg; Mr and Mrs Dan Allen, Mrs Grover Wiley and Mrs E. A. Stone of Burlington; Mr and Mrs Frank Kinkead and Mr and Mrs Hez Giesy of the Pleasant Hill Neighborhood and Mr and Mrs Lloyd Steele of Buffalo. Henry Ray Newlan, son of Mr and Mrs John Newlan, was born near Gridley, Kansas on June 3, 1883 and departed this life at his home near Garnett, Kans., on July 19, 1942 at the age of 59 years, one month and 16 days. He united with the Christian church when he was about 22 years of age and at the time of his death was a member of the Christian church at Pleasant Hill. On December 26, 1906 he was united in marriage to Miss Lula Ann Griffith and to this union were born four children. One child, Dwight Newlan, died in infancy. He is survived by his wife; one son, Lester Ray Newlan, of Westphalia, and two daughters, Mrs Alice Leowe of Salina; Mrs LaRee Thexton of Welda; six grandchildren, four granddaughters and two grandsons; one brother, Levi Newlan of Gridley, one half-sister, Mrs Mabel Bolen, and two half-brothers, Fred and Ralph Johnson, besides a host of other relatives and friends who will greatly miss him. |
