The 1880 Census for Cedar Rapids, IA lists:

Joseph MCLAIN Self M Male W 31 IRE Painter IRE IRE

Mary MCLAIN Wife M Female W 23 NY Keeping House IRE IRE
Maggie CONKLIN SisterL S Female W 21 IA Dressmaker IRE IRE

They were living at 190 Mill (or Benton). Mary McFarland was a servant.

The 1900 IA Census lists only one person named Joseph McLain and it is not this individual. The family probably moved out of state between 1880 and 1900.

The 1932 newspaper article of John & Jennie Newquist's 50th wedding anniversary mentions the attendance of Joseph McLean (McLain?), who was a relative of Jennie's - most likely her brother-in-law.

Bud Newquist recalls meeting John McLean ( Jennie's nephew ) who lived in Philadelphia. He would bring his family to visit Genevieve at Steger. Mike Newquist has a picture of the McLean sisters. They would also probably visit Marie Gansen, who was Jennie's neice. (Margaret Sweeney's daughter).

One of the John McLain's daughters was named Barbara. (Bud 5/03)

I am interested in research on this family. Mary and Maggie were my grand-aunts.

Did Joseph Mclain ever live in southern Iowa or have children with the names of Charles, Mary, Margaret, and others? I ask since my great-grandfather was a Joseph McLain.

Joseph McLain had two sons - John (b. after 1880) and Arthur (b.1882 in IA). John had two daughters - Barbara (b.1815) and a younger one (name unknown). The family moved to Germantown, PA and would frequently make summer visits to relatives in IA and Steger, IL.

The last time we recall hearing of the McLain's was in 1936 or 1937 when Barbara and her daughter were in Chicago on their way to Philadelphia. (Bud Newquist)
