Note that only one JONES daughter was married.

An unknown Joseph Jones purchased land in Fountain county on April 8, 1833. It is recorded in the "Commissioner's Book" and was located in Section 16, one of the sections reserved for the commissioners to sell for the school fund. It was in township 20, range 7 and located in Van Buren township (adjacent to Richland township). I don't know how many acres were involved but there were 8 men who purchased land in the section. If all purchased the same amount it would, as you know, be 80 acres. --Gary Purviance, e-mail, Jan. 19, 2005

Joseph Jones and family were somewhere in Indiana in ca. 1834 when dau. Elizabeth C. was born, also in Indiana Feb. 23, 1836, when dau. Marianne was born, and still in Indiana Oct. 6, 1839, when son Joseph was born. They were in Illinois by May 1841 when dau. Mary E. was born.

The 1840 Fountain Co., IN, census index does not include a Joseph Jones. There are 17 Joseph Jones indexed in the State of Indiana in 1840, plus 5 more with middle initials.

The 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses consistently state that son Joseph R. was born in Indiana. Although the 1880 and 1910 censuses show he was b. in Ohio, his 1883 biography states he was b. in Hamilton Co., IN, which is the 3rd county east of Fountain Co. However, the 1840 Hamilton Co., IN, census index does not include a Joseph Jones while the 1840 Hamilton Co., OH, census enumerates a Joseph Jones in Symmes Twp., but appears to be a different Joseph Jones as his household included too many people, and the rest of his siblings (except brother Evan W.) and their families have all been accounted for.

1840 Decatur Co., IN, census, Clinton, Fugit, & Salt Creek Townships (the only county in Indiana where both families might be, but neither family is the right one) JOSEPH JONES, line 1, p.178: 1 M 30-40; 1 F 20-30; 2 M under 5 E. JONES, line 17, p.183: 1 M & 1 F 30-40; 1 M & 2 F 15-20; 3 M 10-15; 1 M & 1 F 5-10; 3 M under 5

Joseph Jones and family were in Vermilion Co., IL, by Oct. 20, 1843, when their dau. Eliza J. died.

1864 June 13, Sixteen Mile Stand, Hamilton Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff wrote her uncle Joel L. Jones: "We have not for a long time [heard] from Aunt Mary [Vorhis] or Uncle Joseys folks. I think it is so strange uncle Josey [Joseph] don't write. I wrote to him the next week after I came home from school."

1864 July 3, Joel L. Jones wrote his son Tighlman serving in the 59th IL Infantry Regiment somewhere in the South: "My* uncle JOSEPH JONES and SARAH is red hot sesech [secessionists] and I am a black abolitionist and you're fighting to free the niggers. Where went their faith? They have no government, but democracy must stand and not let the flag trail in disgrace."

  • Writing to his son, Joel probably meant to say "Your uncle JOSEPH." Joel appears to be particularly incensed towards his brother in this letter.

1864 July 12, Cedar Villa, Hamilton Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff wrote her cousin Tighlman Jones: "I have not heard from Uncle Joseph since in April. I am satisfied that my letters are bitter pills that cannot be swallowed. they choke on them. I wonder how they will get along when the war is over and the finger of scorn is pointed at them as traitors. Almost all my relatives are, must I say it, Copperheads* [underlined]. Isn't it too bad. I can't enjoy myself in their society like I could if they agreed with me in sentiment. How any person can have a feeling of sympathy for such fiends as those that presided at Fort Pillow [TN], have charge of our poor boys at Richmond, Charleston and all other black holes of the South, worse than the black hole of Calcutta. I don't want to mingle too freely with them. Our neighborhood is very much mixed up, some being war democrats, others Vallandighamers, the remainder Republicans, but strange to say the women all belong to our soldier's aid society. All go to work with a will."

  • Copperheads were Northern Peace Democrats who criticized President Lincoln's administration during the Civil War. Loyal Unionists claimed the Copperheads were pro-Southern because they opposed Lincoln's attempts to free the slaves in the South, favoring, among other things, a compromise with the Confederate States to end the war. The movement reached its peak early in 1863, but Union military victories and Republican election victories in 1864 helped to end the Copperhead movement. --World Book Encyclopedia

1866 Dec. 16, Sunday Morning. Ada Wyckoff wrote her uncle Joel L. Jones: "We are all disappointed uncle / we expected to see you this winter / I wish you had come here last fall instead of going to uncle Isaiahs, / If I could see you and uncle Josey this winter I would be so glad but Ma and Pa think they cannot spare their baby to go so far from home."

1867 Sept. 16, Conkeys Store, IL. Marion Jones wrote his "respected" cousin Jane Love: "Uncle Jo and Aunt Polly are gone to Springfield on a visit and we young folks are running the She bang."

1868 Dec. 29, Sixteen Mile Stand, Hamilton Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff Hopkins wrote her uncle Joel L. Jones: "We received a letter from Marion a short time ago / he is teaching near uncle Joseys. Uncle's daughter Mary Harris has moved to Cass, Co, Missouri / o Marion says Josey talks some of going in the Spring / Phebe Ramsey has also moved to Cass Co / They like it very well."

1869 Sept. 27, Joseph Jones died, age 68y 1m 27d [b. July 31, 1801]; buried McFarland Cemetery (also known as Dalbey Cemetery), Oakwood Twp., Vermilion Co., IL. --Gary Purviance, e-mail, Jan. 18, 2005

no date [ca. 1873], Ada Wyckoff Hopkins wrote her cousin Jane Love: "I received a letter from Sarah Dolby in which she writes that Aunt Polly [widow of Joseph Jones] has sold their farm and are going to move to Kansas near Coffeeville.* Joseph [Aunt Polly's son] is there now / has bought an improved farm. There is some talk of Sallie [Aunt Polly's dau. Sarah?] marrying. They sold the farm for $4000. Sale bill $1000. broke up housekeeping last fall / spent the winter in Springfield / are now at Browns."

1877 Sept. 8, Mary Jones died, age 69y 11m 6d [b. Oct. 2, 1807]; buried McFarland Cemetery (also known as Dalbey Cemetery), Oakwood Twp., Vermilion Co., IL. --Gary Purviance, e-mail, Jan. 18, 2005

Writing for her grandmother, Mary M. Jones Vorhis, Ada Tharp wrote Jane C. Love, granddaughter of Mary's brother, Evan W. Jones, in a letter dated Jan. 29, 1891, from Troy, Iowa, enumerating the dates of birth of Mary's siblings; for brother Joseph, she stated: "Joseph Jones. was born Aug 1st 1801" Correspondence from the family letters and papers of Jane Love and her cousin, Lillice Jones Harper, courtesy John, Danny, and Dave Harper in 2001 and 2004, transcribed by Brenda Boyer
