Joseph Holwell retired from farming to become a produce merchant. In the 1901 Census Joseph and Mary Holwell lived in Bourke Street, Raymond Terrace, where Joseph ran his produce store on the corner of Bourke Street and King Street, beside the Williams River. The Raymond Terrace Examiner and Lower Hunter and Port Stephens Advertiser noted on 21 June 1912 that Joseph Holwell intended to sell his store at auction.

Joseph Holwell died in Balmain, Sydney on 23 October 1919, aged 75 years. He was an inpatient at Callan Park Hospital. His obituary was published in the Raymond Terrace Examiner and Lower Hunter and Port Stephens Advertiser on 31 October 1919:
