His widow, Phebe, was granted administratrix of his estate. His estate, including the homestead, was inventoried with a value of L1,980.16.8. At his death, Joseph Holmes left nine children. In the division of his estate were acres at Whale Hole: among the boundaries given was that which touched "the land which Mr. Elisha Holmes purchased of his son John."
