Joseph Richard Hawthorn was the step grandfather to Brigadier General John Herbert Kelly, known as the "Boy General of the Confederacy." General Kelly and his brother, Rollin Herbert, grew up at Hawthorne House, the lovely Antebellum plantation in Pine Apple, Alabama. J.R. Hawthorn built the home for his new wife, Harriet Herbert Hawthorn, in 1852. The beautiful home is still standing today.
