Birth: Oct. 6, 1828
Death: Mar. 8, 1845
Died in March 1845 from a stab wound received when he and his brother, Joshua King Hawthorn, were in a fight with a freedman. The freedman was hanged in October 1845.
Notes for James Regan Hawthorn: From the 1881 book, 'History of Conecuh County', by Rev. B.F. Riley, the following is found on page 124:
"In March of this year (1845), a sad tragedy occurred in the vicinity of Bellville, which, because of its connection with one of the most distinguished families of Conecuh, cast a gloom over the whole county. A freedman, who was popularly known as 'Free Henry', in a reencounter with Joshua and James Hawthorne - two sons of Colonel J. R. Hawthorne - fatally stabbed the latter named young man. The freedman was arrested, lodged in jail in Sparta, at the approaching term of court convicted of murder, and was publicly executed by hanging, in October of the same year."
