Joseph Hathorne prospered, first as a ship captain and then as a farmer. He married Sarah Bowditch, daughter of William Bowditch and Mary Gardner, who was the first cousin of Ruth Gardner Hathorne.

Will of "Joseph Hathorne of Salem ... Yeoman", dated 25 Jul 1759, proved 15 Jul 1762, names wife Sarah; two Daughters Ruth & Sarah; son Daniel; John Hathorn & Susanna Hathorne [sic] the Children of my Son John lately Deceas'd; real estate divided between "my Sons William & Daniel & to my Daughters Ruth & Sarah".
