Joseph was employed as a miller, and was living at the home of Robert Freeburn (father-in-law of his brother, William) in 1850. (1850 U.S. Census, 45th District) His birth date and marriage was confirmed by the LDS Library, SLC, Records of Jacob Bigler. Morton's History of Preston County lists Joseph's wife as Mary Posten. However, the 1870 US Census of Bates County, Missouri, lists his wife as Sarah. Joseph was living in California Township, Coffey County, Kansas in 1859. Joseph and his family were living at Walnut, near Pleasant Gap, in Bates County, Missouri in 1870. (US Census) He was a farmer with land wealth of $2500 and a personal estate of $500. According to his brother Harrison's Civil War pension records, Joseph later was living in Arvonia, Osage County, KS in 1880. The 1880 Kansas Census has Joseph and his family living in Superior Township, Osage County, Kansas. The 1885 Nebraska State Census (June 2, 1885) has Joseph, wife Sarah, and sons William and Joseph, living in the 1st ward, Grand Island, Midway Borough, Hall, Nebraska.
