_DCAUSE: Old Age

According to the Census of 1860, Elizabeth was born in Maryland about 1789. However, on her death record, it is noted that she died on 1/26/1877 at the age of 94 years. This would make her birthdate 1783. She was the daughter of Jacob Smith and Elizabeth (Brown) Smith of Washington County, MD. Her father was a "pioneer" resident of Maryland, emigrating from Germany. (Morton's History of Preston County) In August 1860, Elizabeth was widowed and was living in Kingwood District adjacent to the home of George, her son, and daughter-in-law, Nancy. Her grandchildren, Angelina and Homer Posten were living with her at the time, as their mother had died in 1857 of Typhoid Fever. (1860 US Census) In August 1870, Elizabeth was living with her daughter-in-law Elizabeth Conley, widow of Washington Abraham Conley, in Valley Township. Her home was between her son Elias and her son William. This likely was on the road between the Bethlehem Church and the Morgan Mine. In the 1870 Census , she was listed as being 76 years old.
