[Caverly by R.D. Owen1.FTW] Received grant of land in ON Sept. 20, 1824.[jean cavalier.FTW] 1851 Census has Joseph and Catharine in Hastings with at least one of their children, Phebe Ann. Land Grants show Jos P with land in Sidney, Lot N1/2 22, issue 1845 (Ont Archives Land Records). Hastings land records for lot 26, con 4 have Joseph Caverly as grantee for 200 acres on June 29, 1811. 100 acres appear to have been sold on July 1, 1811. The last date that Joseph shows up for the 100 acres that is left is on Aug. 24, 1837. Upper Canada Militia Roll, 2 Mar. 1831 - Joseph, age 42, is listed a Sargent in same regiment as Amos Miles. Early Militia Lists in Hastings 1799-1829 by Don C. Kellqway, published booklet of transcribed old Militia Rolls. Joseph Caverly, age 34, lot 26, con 4. 1837 Rebellion - Joseph P along with a number of other men (Gideon Turner, Aaron Hearns, Peter Davidson, Joseph Canniff, Rebun White), were arrested and accused of being rebels. He was not convicted and later released. Arrested Dec. 17, 1837, freed on bail Jan 2, 1838. Noted as a farmer. - "The Rebellion of 1837 in Upper Canada" by Colin Read and Ronald J Stagg. Kingston Chronical and Gazette, 16 May 1838, p3, col 1. He put forward a claim for damages of 520 pounds for spending 83 days in jail but his claim was denied like many others. - "The Rebels of Hastings" by Betsy Dewar Boyce. Joseph P. age 37, Dec. 8, 1828 Upper Canada Militia Roll. Petitioned for a lot in Belleville, 11 May 1819. Resident of Twp. of Sydney for 18 years. Upper Canada Land Petitions 1787-1840 C, Part 2 Vol. 88, No. 109, microfilm C1646. May 1850 Joseph petitioned for 100 acres of land for serving as a private in the Hasting Militia, Hank Co. Town of Kingston. commanded by Capt. John W. Mctosh (1812). Eva found a register report noting a Joseph Caverly died Jan. 12, 1833 in Alexandria, VA and he married a Phoebe. They had children Joseph P. Caverly, Phoebe Caverly (d Jan. 12, 1833, Alexandria VA) His name is spelled as John Cavilier in the book "Pioneer Life on the bay of Quinte" p. 343 when he married Catherine Wartman. Petitioned for land in 1850 based on service in War of 1812. We know Amos was a brother to Joseph. I only wanted to make a note of this in my files at this time. We can’t really surmise anything with so little detail; only gather in what we find.
