  1.   Comments by relatives: Both died from food poisoning; lived in
Mojave, CA during the depression and worked for the Railroad. He and
his wife also had several rental properties in Mojave according to a
neice who stayed with them for a period during the depression. Josephs
death certificate shows 1869 as his birth year, but that is incorrect,
as his birth records in Anoka County MN show 1870 and he has a sister
born in Jun of 1869. This is a letter I received from Joshep's Nephew,
Roy A. Cartier on Feb 5th 1998: "Hi Tom; I received your message and
Susan Sauls regarding Joseph Cartier Jr. The only information I have
is what I remember. I think Susan is right on all she said in her
letter. Joseph Cartier was not a Rancher. He had retired from the SP
railroad as a Carpenter when I first met him in Mojave Ca.; about
1929. His adopted daughter did not live with him when I got there,
nor did she live there any time after I got there. All I can remember
about her is a plain girl who I never got to know at all. She got
married out of town and lived there after she married. I met her
husband but do not remember him at all. It was the time of prohibition
and Uncle Joe liked his beer. His remedy was he made home brew. He
brewed it in his basement and bottled it. It seems at time he got a
little anxious and bottled it a little green. The result of that once
in a while you would go to visit Uncle Joe, you would hear an
explosion in the basement and hear shards of glass flying through the
air in the basement. It seemed he did not like to drink alone so when
I would go over there, he would share a bottle of his brew with me. He
was not an alcoholic. I liked him very much and spent some time
visiting him. I do not remember his wife, Josephine, as being very
friendly. I have no recall of eating any of her cookies. He owned two
or more houses. My folks rented one of his houses and we lived there.
Uncle Joe and Aunt Josephine moved to Morro Bay a few years before I
left Mojave. I never visited them there. I think that every thing you
have about their death is accurate. I cannot confirm whether it was
beans or beets. They were very frugal folks and probably cut the
processing time short or did not discard some that should have been,
and it led to their demise. I think that daughter Genevieve had a baby
daughter but I do not know any more about the child. I do not think I
helped you very much. I do think the important facts are accurate as
you and Susan related them. Thanks for sending them on to me. See ya
    later. All the best... Roy."
