Facts and Events
From Bart Morgan: "Joseph Thomas Burch was a fairly well off land owner in Chesterfield District, South Carolina. His land was near the North Carolina Border. The 'Old Burch Cemetery' is located there. "When Sherman's army came through Chesterfield County they burned Joseph Thomas' and Susannah's home and most of the other buildings. Joseph was held prisoner for a while. All five of Joseph's and Susannah's living sons were in the 4th Regiment, 12th Bat, 4th Sqd., A Company of the South Carolina Cavalry." According to the Burch Family Book by W. Bernettte Burch, pg 2: "He was a large slaveholder and planter captured by Sherman's Army and his home, property, etc. burned or destroyed. His 6 sons served in the Confederate Army through the entire war and were all calvarymen." 1850 Census Chesterfield District, South Carolina PAGE NO: 146b Enumerated November 25, 1850 by Wm Strother 738 Burch, Joseph T. 52 M Farmer 5,000 So Ca 738 Burch, Susannah 47 F So Ca 738 738 Burch, Susannah H. 16 F So Ca 738 738 Burch, Jesse E. 13 M So Ca 738 738 Burch, William M. 11 M So Ca 738 738 Burch, Eliza D. 8 F So Ca 738 738 Burch, Tristram T. 6 M So Ca References
