Served in the Revoluntary War as a private in Capt. John Morgan's Company, detached for militia of Hampshire and Worcester companies. He enlisted 3 Jan 1778; discharged 1 Jul 1778; service 5 mos, 27 days, guarding store and magazines at Brookfield and Springfield. He was also a private in Silas Fowler's Company, Col. David Mosely's Hampshire County Reg. Service from 12 Jun to 17 Jun 1782, 7 days, at Springfield and Northhampton.

Joseph was a widower when he departed with son Joseph's family for Java, NY, on 12 Sep 1823.

Married Lydia Miller (sister of Hannah who married Joseph's brother, Thomas).
