- Father Joseph Ayd, in Maryland Archives, Loyola/Notre Dame Library.
"Father Joseph Ayd, S.J. served concurrently for many years as instructor in sociology, psychology and ethics at Loyola College in Maryland and chaplain in the Maryland prison system. In 1946 for reasons of increasingly poor health, Fr. Ayd relinquished his academic duties to concentrate solely on his prison ministry. He was a strong advocate of prison reform and prisoner rehabilitation and active in investigative efforts to determine the real perpetrator in capital crime cases. This was during the time when Maryland law included the death penalty which Fr. Ayd opposed on principle. He was often assisted in his investigative efforts by his friend, journalist, author and fellow Baltimorean, H.L. Mencken..." ----- [includes photo of Father Ayd in front of a prison taken three years before his death in 1957]
