In a letter written to John Beinschroth (wife was Katharine Wagner), Josef says:
Dear uncle John!
With my present lines I would like to let you know that we are all healthy and hope the same for you. We received your letter, although quite a while ago, and please don't be mad that it took us so long to write. We are working; myself and Andrész as well; in November I retire, because this year I reached age 60, Andrész still has to work 3 more years. I'm still in good shape, but why should I work when I get enough retirement benefits to live comfortably from them. I will live together with Andrész's; there is a room there for me and we are going to get along just fine - the 3 of us.
Well, my dear brother in law how are you doing? I'm sure it's not easy to live alone; good thing the Tichi's live near by. Believe it was much better when Elizabeth from Canada was there; the mild climate was good for her as well; it was not as cold as in Canada and it helped her with her ailment. They just wrote not too long ago and poor Elizabeth is still sick.
Dear brother in law John, I believe we wrote to you about the sorrow of Örzse when brother in law András as well as their oldest son, also András, died. Our poor Örzse is very weak, this tragedy hit her hard. I'm going to visit them this fall. The Aradi's are rather well. It would be nice if you were not so darn far and we could visit with you from time to time, but this way it would cost way too much money.
Do you have good crop in the garden this year? It helps that you have something to do; it also helps with health. I believe you also get some money from the state don't you? Poor Kathy, if she would still be alive, would have quite different life, but this is life, we get old and have to get going, one sooner the other later; but we all have to face it.
Dear brother in law write sometimes if it's not too difficult, a few lines if you manage ; we are always waiting for a letter and promise this time we will write more often.
Many kisses from us all;
Greeting for Tichi's as well; it would be nice to get them to know also.
Józsi
