Facts and Events
He operated the mill after his father's death and farmed. According to the story of a slave named Tim, Jonathan Westbrook died when he was poisoned by another slave named Pete Motte. The story has it that Pete Motte, having gone to Kingston to get medicine for his master, added the fatal dose of poison. The storyteller, Tim, was a native of Africa and evidently was quite talented as a "doctor" particularly in rheumatic cases. He was well-known and sought out in surrounding towns. He remained with the family until he was very old, and then left on his own, his master having given him his freedom (unnamed document in file found at Bennington, VT Library). References
