    "Pitman, Jonathan. This surname was found early at Salem, Mass., where it was also spelled Pitnam and Pickman.

    Mr. Jonathan m. at Stratford, 29 Nov. 1681, Miss Temperance Welles. She was dau. of Mr. John, b. abt. 1654, d. after 1728. He d. at Stratford, 1 Dec. 1731 ae. 91 (g. s., Episcopal Yard). Will 13 Mar. 1727/8, proved 6 Dec. 1731; 'antient and under ye decays of Nature'; wife Temperance, life use of moveable estate; to my dau. Benedict £5 and my cupboard in ye celler; residue to cousin Samuel French of Stratford; cousin Samuel French and cousin John Thompson, Exec'rs; overseers, Capt. John Welles, Joseph Welles, Nathaniel Curtis."

Thomas1), … married … Jonathan Pitman, born c. 1640; and died 1 December 1731 at age 91 according to his gravestone in the Episcopal Church Yard, Stratford, Connecticut (Hale 530). … The will of Jonathan Pitman, dated 13 March 1727/28, mentions his wife Temperance, his daughter Benedict [this refers to the widow of his son Samuel; she had already married Joseph Benedict], and his cousin Samuel French and cousin John Thompson, and was proved on 6 December 1731 in Fairfield, Connecticut (Fairfield Probate District, Connecticut Estate Files, docket no. 4990). The overseers of his will were Capt. John3 Welles (#121) and Joseph3 Welles (#122), his wife's nephews, and Nathaniel Curtis, husband of her niece Hannah3 (Welles) Curtis (#127)."
