- James Key had a brother Jonathan Key, a tailor, who lived on the opposite side of White Oak River in Onslow County, NC that was formed in 1734. Jonathan Key, brother of James Key, died in Onslow County, NC on December 26, 1778 leaving a wife Susannah and three girls: Polly, Nancy, and Elizabeth (Betsy).
- Jonathan Key served as a musician in the Revolutionary War in Donaho's Company and later as a Private. He enlisted in 1777 and was discharged on August 21, 1778. He received land grant No. 1805 for 228 acres of land located in what is now Williamson County, TN which he later sold to Zebulon Hubbard.
