Census: 1790 U.S. Census, VT, Rutland Co., Benson T., image 0183, roll M637_12, page 35, online at Ancestry.com: Jonathan Jones is listed in this probably correct location. His name is followed by only a "1" in the first column for himself. Above him is listed William Jones, and the numbers to indicated 2 males of 16 and up, 4 FWM under 16, and 3 FWF. I suspect this is Jonathan's son William. Jonathan is thought to have died in 1803, William is his oldest son, born in 1751. If Jonathan was about 20 when Wm was born, he would be about 60 by 1790, an advanced age for the time.

Sheldon Gibbs exhibited accounts against the estate that were not allowed of $171.0 "Be it remembered that on the last tuesday of May A 1804 there was in return made to this court by Asa Jones that he had read the above citation in the hearing of Sheldon Gibbs and his wife and Jabez Carter, Phinneas Jones and no appearance made the court proceeded and granted a commission to Asa Jones the Administrator on the Estate of Jonathan Jones to make sale of the whole of the real estate of the said deceased . . ."

The estate, being insolvent, paid seventy one cents on the dollar. Asa was ordered to pay it by three months from 27 Nov 1804.

The following is from Bruce E. Jones, [email protected] concerning information a genealogist in CT discovered for him. "She dug up documents from the State Library at Hartford. I have land records dated June 27, 1757 that state 'Jonathan Jones of Saybrook purchased land in Killingworth from J. Morris Smith for forty four pounds lawful money . . .' (This proves that he was the same Jonathan of Saybrook who was a LT in the French and Indian War). I also have land records that show that Jonathan Jones of Killingworth deeded this same land to Phineas Jones on July 13, 1786 for 'fifty five pounds lawful money'. Then the last document I have shows that Phineas Jones of Killingworth deeded the same land to Daniel Kelsey of Killingworth for 'six hundred dollars' on March 25, 1803. So, not only does this show historically that money changed from British pounds to American dollars between 1786 and 1803, but it also shows that Phineas may have left Killingworth, or at least sold the family land in 1803, the same year of Jonathan's death." Bruce also sent copies of the deed of 1757, the deed of 1786 which firmly establishes Phineas as his son, and the deed of 1803 when Phineas sells this land. Finally, Bruce sent a copy of another deed , vol 13, page 298, where Jonathan sells land to Reuben Clark of Saybrook. Jonathan signs with his mark. Asa Jones is a witness.

Military Service (possible) At Ancestry.com, the database "Connecticut Soldiers, French and Indian War, 1755-62" there are two listings for Jno. Jones, one on page 205 in Trumble's Regiment, Col. Jonathan Trumble, cmdr, in Day's Company, of Capt Benjamin Day. It says: "Company for his Service in the Alarm for the Relief of Ft. Sm. Henry and places adjacent in Aug. 1757" The other listing is on page 241 for Hoyts Regt, Col Jonth. Hoyt cmdr, in Fitch's Co, Capt Perez Fitch cmdr. with the same service as above in Aug 1757. At www.colonialct.uconn.edu are the COLONIAL CONNECTICUT RECORDS 1636-1776. On page 557 of Vol I0 is found: "That in the sixth regiment shall be raised fifty-five men, and in the seventh regiment shall be raised forty-two men, making ninety-seven in the whole, which shall be the tenth {414} company in the second regiment sent from this Colony in said camp, and that Josiah Lee, of Farmington, be Captain, Jonathan Jones, of Saybrook, First Lieutenant, and Peleg Refield, of Killingworth, Second Liertenant of said company" However, the opinion of Barbara McCoy is that there is no absolute proof that this is the Jonathan Jones, father of Phineas Jones. It is the correct name and place for Jonathan.
