[1] Birth: Oct. 26, 1835 Berks County Pennsylvania, USA Death: Jul. 31, 1909 Alfalfa County Oklahoma, USA The following obituary appeared in an Alfalfa County newspaper: DROWNED-Salt Fork river at Colby bridge claimed a victim in its treacherous depths last Saturday morning in J.J.Grett who attempted to ford the stream and was swept out of his buggy and was washed down stream quite a distance where his body was recovered a couple of hours later. His team was also drowned as was a pet dog, the constant companion of his master. Mr. Grett was a pioneer settler of old Wood county, comingin with the opening of the Cherokee Strip setteling on 160 acres, four milesnorth and 2 miles west of Ingersoll. He was well known and highly respected by everyone for his upright homesty and sterling manhood. He leaves a family of four daughters and one son, all of whom were at the grave side except one daughter living in California. He was buried Sunday at Keith's cemetery. A Kingman County Kansas newspaper reported: J.J.Grett, a one-time citizen of Kingman county was accidentally drowned while attempting to ford a swollen stream near his home in Oklahomalast Saturday, his team also being drowned. The following obituary has been furnished by a friend of the deceased.Jonas John Grett was born in Brooks county, Pennsylvania October 26, 1835, died July 31, 1909, aged 73 years, 9 months, and 5 days. On May 9, 1856 he was united in marriage with Miss Emma Fry. To this union were born eight children, of whom three died in infancy, the remaining five surviving him, they being Elmer Grett of Cheney Kansas, Mrs. W.S. Deweese of Nashville Kansas, Mrs. B.F. Deweese of Calista Kansas; Mrs. Henry Phillips of Richmond, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Sarah Hopkins of Los Angeles, California. Deceased moved from Brooks county Pennsylvania to Burr Oak, Michigan in 1863 from thence coming to Kingman county in 1885; moving from there he settled in Oklahoma in 1893, on the homestead which was his home at the time of his death.
