Like his older brothers, John joined a British army unit during the Revolutionary war, most likely about 1781-2 when he was 15 or 16. He was listed as a U.E. (United Empire loyalist) for his service with Jessup's Corps.[5]. He is listed as single on a provisions list of 1786.[5] Like his brother Jacob, he settled in the township of Matilda in Upper Canada.[4][6] He became a Methodist. He died in 1851 in the adjacent township of Mountain at the home of his son Elijah[3] of "inflamation on the lungs".[2]
