"John also took up a sea-faring life and served on the Clippers engaged in the wool and guano trade. He sailed for some years along with two cousins from North Ronaldsay. These were John Muir of Burray and Hugh Muir of Midhouse. John Tulloch himself eventually married and settled down in Southampton, where his wife belonged.

The pull of the sea was evident in their family too, and one of John's sons, serving as a Senior Officer on a British Cruising Liner, was present at the Agadir incident of 1910-11. His thoughtful and well-considered evidence at the Court of Inquiry is credited as an important contribution in helping to smooth over the quarrel which at that time looked like blowing up into an international crisis." - A Window on North Ronaldsay, Peter Tulloch, 1974
