Facts and Events
In the 1860s, William's older sister Mary was "warned out" of her house along with her husband and young daughter. She returned to Senness, where she would be in line to inherit the croft. At that point he decided that the croft did not offer much prospect for both his sister and himself so with his wife and young family they cleared out in order to start life afresh in Kirkwall. He established himself as a boatman and fisherman and was reasonably successful for many years before being involved in a boating accident. This happened while he was ferrying naval sailors back to their ships during a visit of the British Home Fleet to Kirkwall, and it cost him his life. Of his family of six sons and two daughters, most of the boys took to the sea. Robert was lost with the "Julia", a Kirkwall schooner, and Martin too was drowned while on a deep-sea voyage. - A window on North Ronaldsay, Peter Tulloch, 1974 References
