Information on John Tate

John Tate was the son of Samuel Tate and Elizabeth Caldwell. He was born May 4, 1758 in Londonderry, Ireland. His father was a ship builder and came to America in their own ship in 1763, when John was five years old. They landed in Philadelphia and settled in York County, Pennsylvania. At 18 years old, John Tate was a resident of Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania when he enlisted December 12, 1776 in the Pennsylvania Militia and fought in the Revolutionary War. John Iredell Tate's grave was marked with a bronze marker in September 1996, as a Revolutionary Soldier.

John Tate married Anne Oliphant October 11, 1790 in Rowan County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of John Oliphant, Jr and Elizabeth Allison and was born June 7, 1768 in Iredell County, North Carolina near Sherrel's Ford. John Tate was a carpenter by trade and in 1792 he erected the largest and most spacious home on Greene and Union Street in Morganton; when he moved to Georgia the property was turned over to his brother David Tate who ran it as the "Tate Hotel" or tavern and later David Tate erected a store and a home on that corner. In 1796 they came to Franklin County, Georgia where they lived until the fall of 1832 when they moved to Gilmer County, Georgia.

John Tate died December 24, 1838 in Ellijay, where he left a will naming all his children. He was buried at the Old Academy Cemetery in Ellijay. Anne went to live with her son, Sam Tate in Pickens County, Georgia and died there April 3, 1841. She was buried in the Tate Cemetery, Tate, later John Tate's body was removed from Ellijay and taken to be placed beside Anne.
