John S. Sprewel served in Company C, 41st Alabama Infantry as a Private
during the Civil War.
When John S. Spruiell died Wolf Creek was out of banks and he had to beburied on his farm near Pell City. His grave is no longer to be found -a field is there now.

Craig, you are right about John Simpson Spruiells father being Jeptha. Someone summited on the World Tree that his father was George C. Spruiell but that is wrong. George C. Spruiell children ended up in Pickens Co, AL. My grandfather was Charles Edger Spruiell he was born in St. Clair Co. Son of Ira J. Spruiell who was the son of William Spruiell. All my grandfather would say about his relatives is that they all went to Texas. He was talking about John Simpson Spruiell family. I heard a story from a woman in Texas that they loaded the wagon in the middle of the night and headed to Texas. John Simpson had many children and they started families in St Clair Co, AL. I do not think they all left St.Clair Co, AL because their are Spruiell still there.

John S. Spruell, dec'd Estate of{ Probate Court for St Clair
In A Matter of Dower { County November 10th, 1879
This day came William R. Spruiell and Arthur M. Spruiell the administrators of said estate and filed their application in writing and
under oath alleging among other things that Nancy Spruiell is the widow of said deceased. And as such is entitled to have a life estate assigned her in one third of certain land desribed in said application for her dower interest therein. The same being lands of which her deceased husband was seized in fee during her marriage with him in and to which she never relinquished her right of dower. And the said land being so selected that such dower can be set off and justly assigned to by meter and bounds. And it being now shown to the court that the proper notice has not yet been given to these interested adversely to said widow in her said claim for dower the assignment of dower prayed for: And it appearing to the court from an inspection of said petition
that the heirs at law of decedent are the following named persons to wit: the said Nancy Spruiell, the widow, and his children viz, the petitioners, William R. Spruiell and Arthur M. Spruiell, Samuel W. Spruiell, Jeptha C. Spruiell, Abraham Spruiell and Archiblad Spruiell, sons of the deceased of full age and Simon S. Spruiell a son and minor over 14 years of age. Mary E. Norris daughter of deceased and wife of Benj F. Norris both of full age, Nancy Stewart daughter of deceased now the wife of Richard J. Stewart. Nancy is a minor but her husband is of full age. And Nathaniel G.J. Spruiell and Samantha Spruiell minor children of George Spruiell who was a son of deceased and died in the lifetime of his said father. All of whom reside in this county. It is thereby ordered by the court that the matter of said application be sat down for a hearing on the 8th day of December AD 1879 and the fee? of which may be submitted in support of the same. It is further ordered that due notice of the nature of said application and of the time above set for hearing thereof be given by citation personally served upon the said Nancy, Samuel W., Jeptha C., Abraham, Archibald, Simon S., Nathaniel G.J. and Samantha Spruiell, Mary E. Norris and her husband Benj F. Norris and Nancy Stewart and her husband Richard J, Stewart for at least ten days before said application shall be heard. And it is further ordered that George R. Cather who is not disqualified by law and who is deemed by the court a fit and proper person be and he is hereby appointed guardian ad libum? for and to protect the interests of Simon S. Spruiell, Nathaniel G.J. Spruiell, Samantha Spruiell and Nancy Stewart the only minor interests in this proceeding: in the matter of dower of said application and all matters pertaining thereto and that he has notice of this appointment.
